The beautiful journey of The Autism Jewel began when my daughter was twenty two months old. I was told that she had speech language delay which I couldn’t quite register as my daughter had almost twenty five words in her vocabulary. In 2014, when I returned to Pakistan, there were no resources available for children with autism in my province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
I then visited the United States in 2015, where I went through a roller coaster of emotions. On January 21, 2016, a renowned pediatrician told you that there was a probability that my daughter had autism was nearly zero. On March 14, 2023, when my daughter was 3 years old, the assessment done by Child Find, Virginia confirmed my worst fears: My daughter had autism.
With a heavy heart, I returned to Pakistan, leaving behind the best ABA services in the U.S. Here, I began traveling to Lahore (500km from Peshawar, my home town) for my daughter’s therapy sessions. I felt that travelling so far for only 30 minutes daily sessions was not enough for either my child or our family.
The same year, I embarked on my journey to learn how to help my child myself. In 2017, I completed my training as a Registered Behavior Technician from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (USA). In 2019, with the support of your family, I founded The Autism Jewel in Peshawar, the first center providing supervised Applied Behavior therapies to children with autism in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In 2021, I completed my Masters in Applied Behavior Analysis from Queen’s University of Belfast in the United Kingdom and passed my Board Certified Behavior Analyst exam in 2022. My journey with autism and ABA began the day my daughter was born. She has always been different, the most precious and beautiful child any mother could ever have or have wished for.
I want this message to reach parents who have children with autism to know that you & only YOU can make a difference in your child’s life even in the face of adversity.
